In sunny Whakatāne, 22-year-old Jacob lives with his mum and dad, with his sister and brother-in-law right next door – and his loyal companion, Harley. Jacob has Duchenne muscular dystrophy, and Harley isn’t just any dog; he’s a Mobility Dog who helps Jacob with everyday tasks and brings comfort, confidence, and plenty of joy through life’s ups and downs.

“Harley’s like part of the family,” says Jacob. “He makes it worth getting up in the morning. Seeing him next to my bed and seeing him smile at me – it just makes my day.”

Matched with Harley six years ago after hearing about Mobility Dogs through his occupational therapist, Jacob says it was one of the best things that ever happened to him. “When I found out I was getting a dog, I was pretty happy – it felt like starting over with a new companion,” he remembers.

Harley, a clever and affectionate golden retriever, quickly proved to be the perfect match. He helps Jacob with practical things like picking up dropped items, opening doors, and even pressing Jacob’s St John’s emergency button if needed. But what really makes Harley special is the emotional support he brings.

“He’s helped me gain confidence,” says Jacob. “I don’t worry so much about what people think anymore. He cheers me up, helps me when I’m anxious, and he knows when I’m sad – he’ll come and put his head on my leg. He’s an awesome friend.”

Harley has been by Jacob’s side through some of his toughest moments, including a serious hospital stay a few years ago. “Dogs aren’t usually allowed in ICU,” Jacob says, “but they let Harley come in and stay with me for a few days. People told me that they thought he saved me. I think I definitely got the right dog for me.”

When he’s not working, Harley loves to roll on his back for belly rubs or tear around doing zoomies. He even has his own “DJ Support” t-shirt — a nod to Jacob’s love of music and DJing. “He loves the music,” Jacob laughs. “Sometimes he barks and dances along, but when it gets too loud, he takes himself off for a bit of quiet time.”

Together, they’ve done some travelling around New Zealand, including a memorable trip to Queenstown where Harley sported a woolly jacket to brave the ice bar. “He looked great,” says Jacob. “He was nice and warm.”

For Jacob, Harley has become an anchor in daily life — a steady source of comfort, motivation, and laughter. Their bond is built on trust, shared routines, and countless small moments of care. Whether they’re out in the community, relaxing at home, or just soaking up the Whakatāne sunshine, Harley brings calm and companionship to every day.

Harley’s been by Jacob’s side through hospital stays, DJ gigs, and even a trip to Queenstown’s ice bar (complete with a woolly jacket!). Together, they’ve built a life full of confidence, companionship, and love.
