In 2000, I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), a life-altering condition that came with its challenges and uncertainties. My introduction to Mobility Dogs happened through the North Shore MS Society and a friend who had one. Little did I know then how transformative this partnership would be.
In 2010, following a personal bereavement, I relocated to the serene surroundings of Lake Hawea near Wanaka. For a decade, I lived independently, renting a flat in a rather isolated area. It was in 2014 that Falco, my Mobility Dog, entered my life. At that time, the future felt uncertain, and I was unsure how rapidly my MS might progress.
Over the years, Falco has become an irreplaceable part of my life. He has not only been a source of immense joy and companionship but also a vital support in managing my MS. Thanks to Falco, I’ve built connections and found a sense of belonging within my community. Together, we’re familiar faces at the supermarket, shops, doctor’s office, and on the streets of Wanaka and Lake Hawea.
Falco serves as my “I’m Disabled” signpost, gently highlighting my need for extra assistance. His presence often sparks smiles, encourages conversations, and even leads to unexpected moments of kindness—like special treatment at times. He’s so loved that airline crew members have requested photos with him on multiple occasions! Falco’s charm also makes him a welcome participant in my card and art groups and an undeniable attention-grabber at local markets, where I occasionally have a stall.
Falco’s impact extends beyond day-to-day activities. Together, we’ve visited primary school classes in Wanaka, participated in the Wanaka St John’s Reading to Dogs program, and connected with Lions and church groups who have supported us. These experiences, which I’d never have ventured into alone, have helped me build lasting friendships and foster meaningful community ties.
On a mental health level, Falco has been my anchor through challenging times, including two bereavements. Living alone, he’s provided a sense of security and ensures I always have someone to care for and think about.
Physically, Falco’s assistance is indispensable. From helping me walk with a harness to picking up and carrying items, opening doors, or being by my side in the shower in case I need help, his support is unwavering. He’ll brace to help me get up if I fall and even alerts me if someone is at the door, giving me peace of mind. As my MS progresses—it recently shifted from Relapsing-Remitting to Progressive—I know that Falco’s support, or that of my next Mobility Dog, will be even more crucial.
Beyond his incredible abilities, having Falco means having the backing of Mobility Dogs, a professional organisation that’s always there to assist us. Their support has been invaluable.
Falco has not just helped me navigate life with MS; he’s enriched it in ways I couldn’t have imagined. He’s my companion, my helper, and my bridge to a community that has embraced us both.
